Sunday, April 3, 2011 - Wellington, FL
USPA 107th U.S. Open Polo Championships™ Quarterfinals Set

Facundo Pieres opened the match with a penalty goal, and Sebastian Merlos followed up with a goal from the field for an early 2-0 lead, but few present believed that the Lechuza team that had been averaging 11 goals per game would be held scoreless for the entire first half of play.

Second chukker goals from Mariano Uranga and Carlitos Gracida had Zacara up 4-0, and still no effective offense from Lechuza.  Gracida scored the only goal of the third chukker as Crab Orchard left the field at the end of the first half with a 5-0 lead.

Lechuza showed a little life in the fourth with Gaston Lisioli (substituting for Martin Espain) and 10-goaler Juan Martin Nero (60-yard penalty conversion) each scoring while holding Zacara scoreless for the first time all afternoon.

Lechuza cut further into the Zacara lead in the fifth, getting a pair of goals from Sapo Caset.  Zacara responded with a single goal from Gracida for a 6-4 edge.

Facundo Pieres made it 7-4 with an early sixth chukker goal, but Lechuza continued to press the Zacara defense.  Caset?s third goal of the game cut the Zacara lead to two goals, 7-5, with time running down on the clock.  With just over a minute left in regulation time, Lisioli drove the ball through the Zacara goal posts, cutting the lead to a single goal, 7-6, but time expired before the ball could be bowled in.

The victory lifts the Zacara record to 1-2, not impressive by any means, but enough to make it into the tournament quarterfinals.  Lechuza had already qualified for the quarterfinals on the strength of two earlier wins, and ends preliminary play with a respectable 2-1 record.

?We were in control of the game from the beginning,? offered Zacara?s 10-goaler, Facundo Pieres when asked about the low-scoring affair, and we didn?t want to press the horses.  We did what we needed to do today.?

Pieres scored only twice in the win, and had been averaging eight goals a game coming in to the contest.  Lechuza?s Sapo Caset scored three times after averaging seven goals a game in their two earlier matches.

The Zacara victory pairs Zacara (1-2) against Audi (3-0) at noon on Sunday, April 10 while Lechuza (2-1) will face Bendabout (3-0) on Saturday, April 9 at 3pm.

  - Wellington, FL

 Audi, Bendabout remain unbeaten
In a defensive oriented showdown between Bendabout and Las Monjitas, Julio Arellano scored the winning goal in a 9-8 overtime thriller that kept the Bendabout team undefeated (2-0) while Las Monjitas (1-1) suffered its first setback in the US Open competition at the International Polo club in Wellington.

Probably one of the most significant factors in Bendabout?s victory was the fact that they held the high-scoring Agustin Merlos to a mere two goals.  Merlos had been averaging over eight goals a game in Piaget Gold Cup play and scored nine goals in his last Open match.

Las Monjitas shutout the Bendabout team for the first two chukkers on its way to a 4-2 halftime score.  First chukker goals from Agustin Merlos, Eduardo Astrada and Santiago Toccalino posted Las Monjitas to an early 3-0 lead.

Bendabout finally got on the scoreboard in the third chukker with a pair of goals from Arellano (one from the field the other on a penalty shot).  Astrada?s second goal of the match in the third was the only offense it could muster through the second and third periods.

Arellano converted two more penalty shots in the fourth with Magoo Laprida scoring from the field.  Merlos kept Las Monjitas alive with his second goal of the game for a 5-5 tie.

Bendabout?s Laprida opened the fifth chukker with a go-ahead goal, but Toccalino scored for Las Monjitas, and the period ended in another tie, 6-6.

Laprida put Bendabout ahead with the first goal of the sixth chukker, but Astrada countered with a goal from the field for Las Monjitas.  Laprida?s second goal of the chukker had Las Monjitas on top, 8-7, but Bendabout fought its way back with Arellano?s fifth goal of the match, as time expired.

Arellano scored the game winning overtime goal after scooping up the ball and racing 240 yards down the field to score the winning goal, and the Bendabout team rode off the field with the 9-8 victory.

Audi beats Orchard Hill, 15-9 to stay perfect

Audi (2-0) got off to another slow start but took control in its afternoon game with Orchard Hill (0-2) as it rolled to a comfortable 15-9 win in its second round of play in the 2011 US Open.

After two near misses, Audi?s Nico Pieres drove the ball through the Orchard Hill goal posts for the first goal of the game.  Pablo MacDonough responded with a goal for Orchard Hill, with Gonzalito Pieres closing out the chukker with a penalty goal for a 2-1 lead.

Nico Pieres and MacDonough traded goals in the second chukker as Audi maintained its one goal lead, 2-1, but seemed to be taking control of the game.

Gonzalito Pieres added two more goals to the Audi total in the third chukker, and younger brother Nico scored for the third time.  Orchard Hill got goals from MacDonough (penalty shot) and Hector Galindo but continued to trail at the end of the first half, 6-4.

MacDonough cut the lead to a single goal with a penalty conversion to open the fourth, but Gonzalito Pieres took advantage of a midfield penalty shot to drive the ball half of the length of the field for a score.  MacDonough responded again with a well-placed shot for a goal, 7-6, and cut the Audi lead to a single goal once again.  This time it was the adept stickwork of Brazilian 8-goaler, Rodrigo Andrade, that took center stage.  Two well-deserved goals ended the period with Audi boasting a three goal lead, 9-6.

Lucas Criado scored in the fifth chukker for Orchard Hill, but a dominating Audi team answered with goals from Gonzalito Pieres and a  beautifully cut  backhander by Marc Ganzi that seemed to curve around the goal post for the score.  The Audi momentum continued to build as they rode off the field with an 11-7 lead.

Macdonough converted a penalty shot for a goal in the sixth and added a goal from the field, but the Audi train continued to run.  A pair of goals from Gonzalito Pieres was complimented by goals from Nico Pieres and Andrade for the 15-9 victory.

?We got started a bit slowly,? smiled Gonzalito Pieres following the match.  ?But I thought we played well in the second half,? he added.

After leading 6-4 at the half, Audi outscored Orchard Hill nine goals to five for the remainder of the contest.

?It was a very physical game,? offered Audi team captain, Marc Ganzi.  ?We really needed this win.?

The win gives Audi a 2-0 record, and puts them in an advantageous position for the quarter finals.  The loss was Orchard Hills second, and will make it tough sledding for Steve Van Andel?s foursome for the remainder of the tournament.

VALIENTE 14, PONY EXPRESS 7

It was a cautious start to the early game, with Pony Express 9-goaler Bautista Heguy scoring the first goal of the game on a 60-yard penalty shot (Safety).   Valiente bounced back, getting a well-played goal from Polito Pieres.  The first chukker ended in a 1-1 tie.

Pieres scored his second goal of the game to open the second chukker. Heguy tied it up again at 2-2.  Valiente continued to press the Pony Express throughout the period forcing fouls which they capitalized on.  A pair of penalty conversions from Nacho Astrada closed out the chukker with Valiente holding to a 4-2 lead.

The Valiente attack picked up speed in the third.  Three goals from Nacho Astrada and another goal from Pieres had them up by four, 8-4.  Pony Express picked up penalty goals from Santiago Chavanne and Heguy as the half ended.

Pieres and Nacho Astrada each scored a goal for Valiente in the fourth, with Heguy?s single goal from the field keeping Pony Express from being shutout in the fourth chukker.  Valiente rode into the fifth with a heady 10-5 advantage.

Pieres scored his fifth goal of the match to put Valiente up, 11-5, but it was Heguy?s penalty goal that got them on the scoreboard.  The Valiente lead held at five goals, 11-6.

Miguel Astrada came to life in the final chukker, scoring three goals from the field, including a well hit 120 yard shot from the right side of the field for the 14-7 final.  Once again, it was Heguy?s lone goal that kept Pony Express from being blanked.

WELLINGTON ? With the U.S. Open scheduled to begin in six days, Orchard Hill was looking for the kind of game it had against Faraway in the USPA Piaget Gold Cup on Sunday at the International Polo Club Palm Beach.

In a physical, penalty-marred game between two winless teams already eliminated from Gold Cup contention, Orchard Hill topped Faraway with a thrilling 11-10 overtime victory.

Veteran player Hector Galindo, the son of a Mexican groom and among the world's top players, scored the winning goal with a follow-up shot after teammate Lucas Criado was hooked and missed his scoring attempt.

With 10-goaler Pablo MacDonough, 9-goaler Criado, 7-goaler Galindo and patron Steve Van Andel, Orchard Hill is among favorites for the U.S. Open along with defending champion Crab Orchard, Audi and Zacara in the 26-goal tournament.

"We want to keep this same rhythm going into the U.S. Open," Galindo said. "We have had great chemistry for three years and we have the horses. We didn't start out well in this tournament but hopefully by the Open we will have it all together. We are ready for the Open."

On Thursday, Orchard Hill will get another "practice" game against Valiente in the subsidiary Butler Handicap Tournament semifinals. In Wednesday's Gold Cup semifinals, Lechuza Caracas plays Zacara at 2 p.m. and Audi plays Las Monjitas at 4 p.m.

In Sunday's game, Orchard Hill beat Faraway despite the play of Mike Azzaro and Nic Roldan.

After falling behind 4-1 in the second chukker, Azzaro and Roldan kept the game close in the closing chukkers. Back-to-back goals by Roldan gave Faraway a 10-9 lead with 1:05 left in regulation until Criado, who took two nasty spills during the game, scored to send the game into sudden death overtime.

In other Sunday games, Las Monjitas 11, Lechuza Caracas 10; Audi 13, Hawks 8; and Pony Express 12, Piaget 11.

On Saturday night in the 10th annual Challenge of the Americas, Team Vanderbilt-Ingram with Wellington's Marc and Melissa Ganzi, Victor Vargas and Bob Jornayvaz defeated Team Play For Pink, 4-2.

"It was a great event for the polo community," said Melissa Ganzi. "When Georgette Escobar called us and said she was getting involved, we were all honored and excited to support her and her recovery from breast cancer."

Mt. Brilliant captures 2011 Iglehart Cup

Bendabout took the field like world beaters Sunday afternoon in the opening chukkers of the finals of the Iglehart Cup at the International Polo Club in Wellington.

After a 1-1 first chukker that had both teams looking for weaknesses in their opponents, Bendabout launched itself ahead of Mt. Brilliant with three second period goals from Lucas Criado that gave Bendabout a 4-2 lead after two.   Nic Roldan?s sole penalty shot accounted for all of Mt. Brilliant?s second chukker offense.

Gillian Johnston scored her second goal of the match in third chukker action to put Bendabout ahead, 5-2.   Mike Azzaro scored for Mt. Brilliant, cutting the Bendabout lead to 5-3 as the first half ended.

After an informative halftime pep talk from Julian Hipwood, Mt. Brilliant?s veteran coach, a refocused Mt. Brilliant team took the field in the fourth chukker, putting immediate pressure on the Bendabout defense.

?I didn?t want the team mounting attacks up the center of the field,? said Hipwood, ?I wanted them to take it down the field along the side of the field.  I didn?t want the other team to be able to take advantage of a miscue by us to turn defense into attack,? said the former 9-goaler.  I

?It appeared to work,? he smiled.

?We talked about finishing our plays,? said Mt. Brilliant team captain Bo Goodman about the halftime discussion under the Mt. Brilliant team tent.  ?We had opportunities early in the game, but we just didn?t finish our plays.?

A goal from Ulysses Escapite cut the Bendabout lead to a single goal, 5-4, but was followed by a 40-yard penalty shot from Chris Nevins.  Although Bendabout held a 6-4 lead, the momentum was about to shift.

Following Nevins? goal, Mt. Brilliant rattled off four unanswered goals of its own, getting three from Roldan and a single goal from Azzaro.  The momentum had shifted, and Mt. Brilliant left the field with an 8-6 advantage.

Mt. Brilliant continued to dominating play in the fifth chukker, shutting down the Bendabout offense and adding goals from Azzaro and Roldan.  With seven minutes left to play, Mt. Brilliant held a 10-6 lead.

Johnston?s third goal of the game was followed by a goal from Nevins, cutting the score to 10-8 when Mt. Brilliant re-exerted itself.  Miserly defense and a final goal from Escapite ended the game in an 11-8 Mt. Brilliant victory.

Nic Roldan led all scoring with six goals and was named MVP for his efforts.  Tulsa, Roldan?s eight-year-old brown mare was named Best Playing Pony.

The surprise of the afternoon might have been the play of Mt. Brilliant?s injured 8-goaler, Mike Azzaro, who suffered a bone chilling fall just days earlier.

Bruised from ankle to elbow, and in a great deal of pain, Azzaro took to the field and turned in a truly heroic effort.

?I think Mike?s (Azzaro) Doctor should have been named MVP today,? joked IPC?s Director of Polo Operations, Jimmy Newman.  Newman was referring to the fact that Azzaro, who was supposed to be sidelined for up to three weeks, played just two days after his fall.

?It?s just very painful,? said Azzaro following the match, ?that?s all I can say.  ?If it weren?t for my doctor, I don?t know what I?d do,? Azzaro said.  ?He?s a miracle worker.?

Valiente rally falls short as Lechuza Caracas wins C. V. Whitney Cup

It was a balanced Lechuza attack that offset a late rally by Valiente and scored a 10-9 win in the finals of the 2011 C. V. Whitney Cup at the International Polo Club in Wellington.

Lechuza took control early on goals from team captain Victor Vargas and Sapo Caset as both teams jostled for the ball.   Valiente?s attack was neutralized by great defensive efforts as the went scoreless though the first period of play..

Juan Martin Nero made it 3-0 with a goal to open the second chukker.  Valiente responded with a goal from the field from 8-goaler Polito Pieres and a penalty goal from Miguel Astrada.  Vargas scored his second goal of the day to give Lechuza a 4-2 lead as time expired.

Nero converted a 60-yard penalty shot in the third and Caset added a goal from the field.  Valiente was held to a single goal from Pieres and left the field at the end of the first half trailing 6-3.

Martin Espain scored to put Lechuza on top, 7-3, but that would be the extent of their offense in the fourth chukker.  Nacho Astrada and brother, Miguel Astrada, each scored a goal, cutting into the Lechuza lead.  Lechuza was up two goals at the end of the period, 7-5.

Espain and Nero each added single goals in the fifth chukker, with Valiente being limited to a goal from Miguel Astrada.  Lechuza sat on top of a 9-6 lead with one chukker left to be played.

Nacho Astrada opened the sixth chukker with a goal from the field, but Vargas responded with his third goal of the day.  Two goals from Pieres brought Valiente to within a goal of Lechuza, 10-9, but time ran out, and Lechuza Caracas took home the 2011 C. V. Whitney Cup.

Balanced scoring from the Lechuza lineup had Nero and Vargas scoring three goals apiece while Caset and Espain each accounted for two goals.

Martin Espain was named MVP while Polito Pieres?s ten-year-old brown Argentine gelding, Sugar, was named Best Playing Pony.

Zacara Takes Ylvisaker Cup in 8-6 Win

A beautiful sunny day and near-capacity crowd greeted the Zacara and Equuleus Polo Teams Last Sunday

When the two teams took the field for the finals of the 2011 Ylvisaker Cup at the International Polo Club, a balanced Zacara attack was to take the day as they handed Equuleus just its second loss of the season in an 8-6 victory

Equuleus took an early 1-0 lead after a penalty conversion from 6-goaler Marianito Obregon, but that was all the offense either team could come up with in the first chukker.

Jeff Blake opened the second period with a goal, followed by a penalty conversion for a goal from Gonzalo Del Tour.  Obregon scored again for Equuleus, but Zacara responded with a goal from Lyndon Lea to close out the scoring.  Zacara rode off with a 3-2 lead.

Mariano Gonzalez put up two goals in the third for Equuleus as they battled back.  The first was a well-placed cut shot from just off the backline for a goal followed by a long run for a second score.  The first half ended with Equuleus on top of a 4-3 score.

Goals from Zacara team captain Lea and Del tour were complimented by lights-out defense, tying the game at 4-4 and then taking a 5-4 lead.

The momentum had shifted, and try as they might, Equuleus could do little about it.  Blake scored his second goal of the game followed by a score from Mariano Uranga, and Zacara found themselves holding a 7-4 lead as the fifth chukker ended.

Uranga's second goal of the game put Zacara ahead by four goals as a desperate Equuleus team fought for a score.  Gonzalez finally came through for Equuleus with a pair of goals, but there was no time left on the clock.  Zacara coasted to the 806 final win and the 2011 Ylvisaker Cup Championship.

Gonzalez led all scoring with four goals.  Teammate Obregon added two goals in the loss.

The balanced Zacara attack had all four members of the team, Uranga, Lea, Del Tour and Blake, scoring a pair of goals.

Uranga and Blake were named Co-MVPs while Lyndon Lea's Magdalena was named Best Playing Pony.

  Ylvisaker Cup Semifinals Set

The Ylvisaker Cup contest between Patagones and Mt. Brilliant would decide a playoff spot in the tournament, and both teams were ready to deliver their best Sunday afternoon.

Mt. Brilliant exploded in the opening chukker, getting three goals from Nic Roldan and an additional goal from Mike Azzaro while Patagones struggled to find either an offense or a defense, but there  are six chukkers in a regulation game, and they would have their turn.

In a game one spectator described as a ?tale of two chukkers?, Patagones had their turn in the second.

Polo legend Memo Gracida scored three straight goals and teammate Martin Donovan added a goal to knot it up at 4-4.  Roldan?s fourth goal of the game ended the chukker with Mt. Brilliant taking a one goal lead, 5-4.

Gracida scored twice (two penalty goals) in the third and Roldan converted a penalty goal of his own to even the score at 6-6 at the end of the half.

Goals from Roldan and Azzaro in the fourth were countered by two more goals from Gracida, who seemed to be all over the field, and the score was tied again at 8-8.Gracida and Donovan added single goals in the fifth for a brief 10-8 lead, but Mt. Brilliant battled back with a pair of goals from Ulysses Escapite and a penalty goal from Roldan.  Mt. Brilliant led, 11-10.

?I think I put on more mileage today than the Energizer bunny today,? said Patagones field general Memo Gracida.  ?Gonzalo (Avendano) did a great job covering the back end while Carlos (Avendano) covered the Number 3 position when I drove forward.?

Carlos Avendano contributed some great efforts in the sixth chukker, scoring twice to give Patagones a 12-11 lead as time was running down.  A final charge by Mt. Brilliant resulted in a last second goal from Escapite, a 12-12 score and a sudden death overtime chukker.

Both teams had chances in the opening minutes of overtime play, but it was a penalty goal by Carlos Avendano that sealed the 13-12 Patagones win.

Gracida led the Patagones attack with eight goals.  Martin Donovan scored twice and Carlos Avendano added three goals, including the winning goal in overtime on a 60-yard penalty shot.

Nic Roldan scored eight times for Mt. Brilliant with teammates Mike Azzaro and Ulysses Escapite adding two goals apiece.

The win pits Patagones against Equuleus in Wednesday?s 3 pm semifinal of the Ylvisaker Cup.

?I think we?re starting to gel as a team,? he added.  ?I think the winner of our semifinal match (against Equuleus) will win the cup.?
